What are you working on? What have you finished? What do you need encouragement on?

Are there any cool events or challenges happening that you want to hype?

What do you just want to talk about?

What have you been watching or reading?

Chores and other not-fun things count!

and completion of orientation. They really are taking anybody with a pulse, as judged by the extremely detailed list of instructions for appropriate behavior during orientation. I'd be more insulted, but that's good for me, I really need a job. If they had higher standards they would hire somebody with formal work experience, or at least an associate's degree.

(Don't think I've stopped applying other places, mind you, but I'm really not in a position to be picky, either.)

Well... if you're interested in reading a book about how living in an over-privileged Connecticut town is terrible and nobody should ever do it (especially if that's going to intersect badly with their terrible childhood) then this is a book you'll like. I preferred Dreadful - the realism : magic ratio in this book leaned a little too realistic, also, I just do not believe that the only school choices are a. fancy schools for wealthy overachievers that have massively high standards and high stakes testing b. xenophobic schools with very low standards and c. homeschooling. Even if there are no public school options there still have to be artsy fartsy schools for wealthy people who know that their kids cannot do the pressure cooker thing starting in kindy.

Weekend Plans

I'm trying to get a bunch of things done before D&D tonight, including cleaning up the hotel suite. I still need to wash clothes this weekend, but I'm holding off on that until Sunday so that I can fit as many as possible into a single load since it's $8 to wash/dry each one.

My hope, however, is to get everything but that done today so that I can properly settle in and play video games all day long tomorrow. I keep saying that's the plan for the weekend, and then something comes up to prevent it, so I'm really going to try my best this time because I know it will help on the mental health front to lose myself in another world for an entire day.

I'm leaning towards Baldur's Gate 3, but I might go with Dragon Age: The Veilguard instead. Or even Mass Effect. I definitely think it's going to be something I've already played before, though, because something new-to-me requires a different headspace that I don't think I'm in at the moment.

We'll see how it goes, I suppose? 🤞🏻

Adrian Tchaikovsky is amazingly hit-or-miss for me, but this looks like it's coming up "hit". The sapient arthropods are a swarm of bees. If there are any spiders, I haven't met them yet!

This week's questions were suggested by [livejournal.com profile] silent_r_infork

1. What was the most sick that you've ever been?

2. What disease are you afraid of getting?

3. Are you a big baby when it comes to taking medicine/shots for your illnesses?

4. Is going to the doctor really THAT bad?

5. Would you have the flu twice a month if you were paid $1,000 for having it?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers. If your journal is private or friends-only, you can post your full answers in the comments below.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so on DreamWidth or LiveJournal. Old sets that were used have been deleted, so we encourage you to suggest some more!

 So, hi.

It's typical for me to vanish for, like, half a year. Which sucks since I have signed up for Fannish 50, of which I've only done 1 so far. Might do a comparison of the How to train your dragon animated vs the real life action one, since I watched the the second one two days ago.

And I have thoughts.

That said, reason for not going on dreamwidth?

Man, the usual. Depression, not wanting to feel pressured, out of sight out of mind, forgetting my password .... and so on.

Otherwise? Just had my June month of the No Writing Academia discord server's fic fight, which I've just realized was a missed opportunity. I could have knocked off 8 of those 50 since I wrote 8 fics. That means this year has been my most successful NWA fic fight since 2022. I only wrote 2 fics in the NWA fic fight 23 and only one in the NWA fic fight 24. The NWA FIc FIght 22 I managed 76 fics. And in the first fight in NWA fic fight 21 , I wrote 90 fics in the span of six weeks ( it had been stretched to six weeks).

Imagine. 180 000 words in six weeks. Never managed that again, lemme tell you. NWA fic fight 22 was four weeks long and I managed 115 000 words across 76 fics then.

So 8 fics for NWA fic fight 25 isn't too bad.

On another note, though. Am I tripping or have all bnha fandom calendar / events blogs stopped their work? Like, bnhafandomcalendar on tumblr hasn't updated since November 2023.  bnhafanevent and bnhafandomevents on tumblr both don't exist.

I even ventured to bluesky and bnhafandomevents hasn't updated since May 2024 there.

- As of July 6th, I'd written more words this year than I had in all of 2024. Mostly this tells you how much 2024 sucked creatively, but also damn, that's a pretty good pace! I'm currently working on something for Summer of Horror and daydreaming about that Liam/Liam/Noel time travel fic that I may finally go back to working on.

- H/C Exchange finally went live! I got Re-Animator mpreg, which was DELIGHTFUL, and I wrote... something completely unexpected, literally on the day of the deadline after I finally gave up on all previous plans.

- I did end up signing up for Battleship. I'll participate for the eight days of it that happen before I leave for vacation. I also prompted a variety of forever OTPs (Liam/Noel) and rarepairs I haven't thought about in ages (Dawn/Illyria). Hopefully someone will be inspired.

- I picked up a couple of things in the summer Steam sale, and thus have done basically nothing the last 2-3 days but play Cult of the Lamb, the cutest little cosmic horror game you ever did see.

Today's offering: Should We Politicize the Texas Flood? Absolutely: When it comes to disasters, accountability delayed is accountability denied

I responded to this post, based entirely on the title, as follows. The response pretty much immediately disappeared, in what amounts to a sea of vitriol.
In common decency, people should refrain from casting blame while victims and bystanders are still reeling, and delay even longer before anything that smacks of blaming the victims.

In the news today, we have a person who lost her job for a social media post saying that the victims got what they deserved, given the voting records of part of the area affected.

I can't find it in me to be annoyed at those consequences.

It's just too soon to say things like that. At least wait until the bodies have been found and buried.

A chat board I once frequented imposed a 3 day delay for comments about disasters. It helped a lot to keep the furor down.

Parts of Krugman's actual text make good sense, and he's right about Trump et al politicizing disasters in "blue" areas. But that politicization was treated - and seen - as shocking at the time. Why does he choose to demonstrate to all and sundry that Democrats are not only just as bad as Republicans, but just as bad as MAGA? At least he managed to avoid blaming anyone except political figures, from county level on up, unlike the doctor who lost her job I referenced in my response.

Yes, the news cycle is likely to move on, forgetting about these floods as soon as some celebrity breaks up with their significant other, or whatever else occurs they think will drive clicks better than "old news". But a delayed furor about these deaths - complete with concerns for future deaths - ought to get news attention, especially if it comes with decent proposals for preventing or at least reducing future deaths.
